Education

Professor Plein went to medical school in Germany, earning an MD in radiology, before coming to the UK for specialist medical training. He obtained a PhD in cardiology at the University of Leeds in 2003 and has been a consultant cardiologist since 2003.

Research

As the British Heart Foundation Professor of Cardiovascular Imaging, professor Plein leads a large research group that aims to reduce heart problems in people with diabetes and inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis. He has published more than 450 journal articles and several books in the field of cardiovascular imaging.
